Sheridan College will receive $149,331 in research funding through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s (NSERC) College and Community Innovation (CCI) Program to fuel digital human visualization and animation development.

The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Sport, made the exciting announcement at Georgian College in Barrie, Ont., on Thursday, June 13. The funding is part of the more than $73 million for NSERC CCI Program and the College and Community Social Innovation Fund (CCSIF). The investment will further research and innovation in Canada for years to come and delivers on the Government of Canada’s commitment to science and research as outlined in the 2018 Budget.

“This grant will fund photogrammetry equipment for Sheridan’s Screen Industries Research and Training Centre (SIRT) and will support ongoing and planned collaborative applied research projects with industry partners,” said Andrea England, Vice Provost, Research. “Our partners are looking to develop applications for virtual characters within television and cinema, virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) and gaming, as well as other screen-based applications, including healthcare and wellness, training and simulation, and various service delivery platforms.”

SIRT will receive the funding over a one-year span. Since being designated as a Technology Access Centre (TAC) in 2013, SIRT has expanded its capacity and joined a national network of TACs supporting a variety of industrial sectors across the country.

“For nearly a decade, SIRT has provided innovation support to Ontario's screen industries in the areas of film, television, gaming and interactive media,” said David Dexter, the Research Centre’s Director. “In recent years, technology has played a major role in the development of content experiences, like VR/AR, and SIRT is on the forefront as a leading technology access centre for Canada.”

SIRT provides an out-of-classroom experience for Sheridan students and faculty on applied research and other industry projects, providing valuable learning experiences for students while building a competitive advantage for companies throughout the screen industries.

“Sheridan’s unique research culture and commitment to innovation have become part of our core identity as a leading postsecondary institution,” said Dr. Janet Morrison, Sheridan’s President and Vice Chancellor. “Through participation in industry projects, our students are learning how to use valuable technology and cutting-edge tools while gaining hands-on expertise in a rapidly evolving knowledge sector. Simultaneously, our community partners are benefitting from SIRT’s infrastructure and expertise in development of products and processes, which in turn benefits the economy – both regionally and nationally."
