‘National Earth Day’ turns 46 today, inspiring millions around the world to take action towards environmental issues.
Many people are bringing awareness to the importance of taking care of the Earth and doing their part in reducing their carbon footprint.
The Town of Oakville has you covered! Different events throughout the community allows everyone to take part in a great cause by celebrating ‘Earth-week’ here at home. Grab your family and check out some of these community initiatives:
- Oakville Public Libraries
- When: April 13-25
- Where: All Oakville libraries
- What: Each library has a different environmental display for Earth Month.
- Oakville Clean Sweep
- When: April 24
- Where: across Oakville
- What: Get out and clean up litter at your school, business, or neighbourhood for 20 minutes.
- 24th Annual Earth Week Clean Up
- When: April 25 — 9:00am – 11:00am
- Where: across Oakville
- What: Clean up one of Oakville's nature sites. Gloves and bags are provided.
- Dive Against Debris
- When: April 26 — 10:00am – 2:00pm
- Where: Coronation Park, east parking lot
- What: Help protect the underwater environment by participating in a waterfront cleanup.
- Halton Eco Festival
- When: May 2 — 9:00am – 4:00pm
- Where: Glen Abbey Rec Centre
- What: 15th year! Environmental displays, eco-cafe, workshops, childrens' activities.

Oakville Community Center for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights (OCCPEHR) is set to host one of the larger initiatives, the 25th annual Earth Week Clean up on Saturday, April 23rd from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
“We look forward to everyone pitching in as our local environment truly needs your attention and support. Help clean up a park, trail, ravine, green space, woodlot or lakefront near to where you live,” said Stephen Dankowich, executive director of the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights.
The OCCPEHR started with just one clean-up location in 1992 and the campaign has grown to a total of 44 locations.
“This annual event is the largest community-wide Clean Up in Canada during Earth Week. 75,000 students and citizens have participated…” stated Don Meade, a Board Member.
The sites are being staffed by various organizations and environmental volunteer groups including the Friends of Bronte Creek Park and the South Peel Naturalists Club.
“The Clean Up campaign promotes awareness and respect for biodiversity, local nature and our trails, parks and waterways…by participating, parents are educating their children about the importance of the natural environment in a very practical way,” said Meade.
