Halton Healthcare Completes Patient Move and Opens Oakville's New Hospital

Halton Healthcare announced today that it has successfully completed the transfer of all inpatients from its now-closed legacy Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) to its newly opened Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital located at 3001 Hospital Gate.

The complex move involved specialty move teams comprised of more than 280 staff, physicians, volunteers as well as the services of Health Care Relocations, a specialized hospital moving company, RNR Patient Transfer Services and Halton and Peel EMS.

During the course of the day more than 270 inpatients were safely transferred to the new hospital. Historic firsts included the last baby born at the legacy site at 7:51am and the first baby born at 9:28 am.

The original OTMH, built 65 years ago, is now closed. All patient care, including emergency department services, is being provided at the new OTMH.

The opening of this new state-of-the-art hospital brings Halton Healthcare closer to realizing their vision of transforming the community hospital experience. The new OTMH has been built to foster a healing environment will provide exemplary patient experiences for many years to come.

Quick facts:

  1. More than 250 patients were moved from the legacy hospital including patients from Intensive Care, Mental Health, paediatrics and maternal child.
  2. The move took just over 10 hours, starting at 8 am and finishing at 6:20 pm
  3. 28 vehicles, including 8 ambulances and 20 patient transports, were used
  4. Emergency Medical Services personnel and ambulances from Halton and Peel helped in the move
  5. The distance between the two hospitals is approximately 11 kilometres
  6. The legacy OTMH at 327 Reynolds Street, Oakville is now closed
  7. The new OTMH at 3001 Hospital Gate, Oakville is now open
  8. All services, including the Emergency Department, have been transferred to the new hospital
  9. No services are being provided at the legacy OTMH
