Oakville Hydro Electricity Distribution Inc. Warns Customers About Phone Scam

Oakville Hydro Electricity Distribution Inc. (“Oakville Hydro”) has received reports from customers regarding a phone scam.

A handful of customers reported receiving a phone call from a 1-800 number posing as Oakville Hydro. The caller threatens to cut off the customer’s power in one hour if they do not receive payment.

This business practice is not aligned with Oakville Hydro’s policy.

As mandated by the Ontario Energy Board, Oakville Hydro must provide customers with a minimum of 48 hours’ notice, by phone, before service can be disconnected. If customers receive a suspicious call, they are encouraged to:

  • Not provide personal or financial information
  • Record information about the person/organization that has contacted them
  • Call Oakville Hydro Customer Service at 905-825-9400 to report the incident
  • Call the OPP’s Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 to report the incident
