Stephen Crawford wins his second term as Oakville MPP on June 2, 2022
Progressive Conservative incumbents Stephen Crawford and Effie Triantafilopoulos have been re-elected to represent Oakville’s two ridings.
Both cruised to easy wins, as Oakville voters mirrored electors across the province by throwing their support behind Doug Ford’s Conservative government.
Crawford captured the Oakville riding with 42 per cent of the vote, while Triantafilopoulos won Oakville North-Burlington with 47 per cent of the vote.
"I think the people of Oakville have recognized the good work we've done both at the provincial level and the local level and they're allowing me to serve them for a second term," said Crawford, from his victory party.
"I want to make sure that everyone in the community knows that I'm there to support them at Queen's Park," he added. "Whether or not they voted, no matter who they supported, I'm there to represent them at Queen's Park."
Far fewer Oakville voters decided to cast a ballot in this election than in 2018. Voter turnout was dropped below 50 per cent in both ridings, down from over 60% in the 2018 provincial election.
The low-key four-week Ontario election campaign saw Crawford and Triantafilopoulos join PC candidates across the province in ducking debates and avoiding questions. But the strategy paid off for Doug Ford’s government, which captured 83 of 124 seats at Queen’s Park.
While Oakville's Liberal candidates made a strong showing, the party had limited success provincially, with leader Stephen Del Ducca losing in his home riding and saying he plans to resign.
The NDP will remain Ontario's Official Opposition, with 31 seats at Queen's Park. The Liberals were elected in eight ridings, while Green Party leader Mike Schreiner was re-elected in his Guelph riding.
