At a special meeting held on Monday, January 11, 2016, Council passed a by-law to hold a by-election for the office of Town Councillor, Ward 2 to be held on Monday, April 11, 2016. Oakville Town Council declared the seat of former Ward 2 Town Councillor Pam Damoff vacant on November 16, 2015. Ms. Damoff resigned her councillor seat after winning the 2015 Federal Election, and became the Liberal Member of Parliament for Oakville North Burlington.

Ward 2's boundaries are Lake Ontario on the South, QEW to the North, 16 Mile Creek to the East, and 3rd Line to the West.  Town councillor renumeration is $48,820.00 per year, and the responsibilities are as follows:

  1. to represent the public and to consider the well-being and interests of the municipality;
  2. to develop and evaluate the policies and programs of the municipality;
  3. to determine which services the municipality provides;
  4. to ensure that administrative policies, practices and procedures and controllership policies, practices and procedures are in place to implement the decisions of council;
  5. to ensure the accountability and transparency of the operations of the municipality, including the activities of the senior management of the municipality;
  6. to maintain the financial integrity of the municipality; and
  7. to carry out the duties of council under this or any other Act.

Town Council oversees the following areas:

  • Local planning and zoning
  • Local storm sewers
  • Local roads, streets and sidewalks
  • Local transit services
  • Libraries
  • Local museums
  • Fire protection
  • Local parks and recreation services
  • Collection of taxes

The key dates for the 2016 Ward 2 Oakville By-election include:

  1. Tuesday, January 12, 2016 — Nomination period begins
  2. Friday, February 26, 2016 — Nomination Day
  3. Monday, April 11, 2016 — Voting Day

Nomination forms may be filed in the Clerk’s department at Town Hall from Tuesday, January 12 to Friday, February 26, 2016, during regular business hours.
