Ward 2 Town Councillor Pam Damoff announced today that she will be seeking re-election for Town Council in Ward 2. Damoff was first elected in the 2010 election after years of work in the Oakville community.
With 27 years experience in the financial and investment banking sector on Bay Street, Damoff believes that she brings a well-balanced mix of both financial prudence as well as community activism to Town Hall. She is an effective problem-solver who believes in collaboration with all stakeholders to develop solutions.
Damoff has been extremely active in the community both before and since her election. She is the Chair of the Oakville Santa Claus Parade, Oakville Terry Fox Run, co-founder of Cycle Oakville and is a proud Polar Bear, both taking part and as a member of the organizing committee for the annual Courage Polar Bear Dip. She is an active supporter of many Oakville charities and service groups. She recently received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal for her community service.
“It has been an honour and privilege to represent the residents of Ward 2 for the last four years, and I am asking for their support to continue my work on Council in the next term,” stated Damoff.
Damoff said that she is looking forward to continuing to work with Ward 2 residents on issues of concern to them. During her first term, she was extremely proud of her work with residents, stakeholders, staff, and her Ward 2 colleague Councillor Cathy Duddeck to preserve Oakville Arena, and see it being refurbished during the next term of Council. “This was something I promised during the last election, and I am pleased to deliver this important facility for our community.”
Damoff is one of only two Oakville Councillors who send out monthly e-newsletters to ensure residents know what is going on in Oakville. She has a reputation for being approachable and not afraid to take a stand on Council and is looking forward to continuing to champion constituents' concerns at Town Hall. “People know that if they come to me with an issue, I will listen and do all I can to make sure that their voice is heard”.
She is proud of her leadership on a number of initiatives during her term, and her work with her Council colleagues on the following:
- a ban on smoking near children in parks, with Councillor Duddeck
- restricting tanning bed use to those over 16 years of age, resulting in Oakville becoming the first municipality in Ontario to do so (something that the Province of Ontario has now adopted), with Councillor Robinson
- free transit for seniors on Mondays, with Councillor Khan
- an ongoing review of the private tree by-law and tree protection during development, with Councillor Duddeck
- support for Share the Road Cycling Coalition's call for dedicated cycling infrastructure funding from the province (a move that was recently introduced by the Provincial Minister of Transportation)
- a ban on shark fin soup, with Councillor Khan
- refusal of new developments at Harvest Bible Chapel and Brookfield/Lakeshore working with Councillor Duddeck. Both of these developments were out of character with the surrounding stable residential neighbourhoods
- supporting Councillor Elgar's work on the protection of the Merton lands (Saw-Whet, Deerfield golf courses and 14-Mile Creek)
- development of a new cell tower protocol for the Town of Oakville, with Councillor Duddeck. Much of the protocols have now been adopted by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities as the model for other municipalities
Damoff has also championed the promotion of cycling, walking and encouraging all Oakville residents to get out and active in their communities. She was awarded the 2013 Bicycling Leadership Award for promoting bicycling in Ontario. “I am particularly proud of the strides we have taken since I was elected. It is one of my goals during the next term to see further growth in cycling infrastructure to see some of those missing connections in our cycling system completed.”
