Mike Cunningham stepped up to the plate on September 10th to add his name to the list of eight candidates running for the position of Ward 3’s Town Councillor, which was vacated by incumbent Dave Gittings who is now running for the Ward’s Town & Regional Councillor.

Oakville has been home for Mike for the past 27 years, and it is where he and his wife decided would be the place to raise their two children. His passion for the community is driven by his commitment to his family. He has been interested in politics since he attended Western University and graduated with a BA in Political Science. Local town politics has a real impact on the daily lives of its citizens and is why he's taking this bid to council seriously.

He feels that Oakville is at a pivotal moment, with so many issues coming to a head from the redevelopment of Downtown Oakville and the hospital lands to the 18,000 people expected to move into the Mid-Town Core and the increases in property taxes for the residents of Ward 3.

“Oakville should ensure that property taxes don’t go up more than the inflation rate as they has for a number of years due to increased property values. The cost of providing services shouldn’t increase more than the rate of inflation,” stated Cunningham.

At Queen’s University he took and earned his Master of Finance. It was the base that allowed him to help steer a multi-billion dollar telecommunication’s fiber optics company in the artic as the Chief Operating Officer. Knowing how to work with various levels of governments and special interests group is going to be crucial in the success of all of these huge projects, according to Mike.

Mike Cunningham believes Ward 3 has several main issues to deal which include: ensuring that tax spending is rational as it relates to inflation, that the downtown redevelopment is carefully envisioned and exceptionally executed, and finally, that the Mid-Town Core doesn’t become another Liberty Village with a lack of necessary supports. He feels he has the right skills to make an excellent town councillor for Ward 3.
