Scott McColeman added his name to the candidacy list for Ward 3 on September 2nd. This will be Scott’s second time to bat. He first ran for Town Council in 2006 and lost by just 40 votes.
Scott didn’t run in 2010 because he had to make a choice between running for council or learning a new job and providing a consistent and safe environment for a Foster Child. He chose the latter. It is that generosity of spirit that demonstrates Scott's true moral compass. He has always been involved with his children's school's parent councils. From 2005 to 2007 he was a director for the United Way of Oakville.
Currently, Scott is the Union Negotiator at Ford Canada. Ford payed for him to attend McMaster University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business and Labor Relations.
“I’m passionate about finding solutions to problems, and want to try to create a better community,” said McColeman when asked about why he wanted to become a town councillor.
From Scott’s perspective, one significant issue facing Ward 3 is the Downtown Oakville Revitalization. He feels the town closes down way to early, and needs to create an environment that stimulates culture. Also, the potentially new community centre must meet the needs of the residents. He intends to create less regulations around the use of public space in the town, which he feels is cumbersome. Finally, he is extremely concerned about residential building permits which are constantly revised, but do not under-go the same level of scrutiny the second time around.
During the last few years, Scott and his family have seen the kindness of Oakville’s community. “Our neighbours were incredible when they found out about our foster child. They were constantly dropping off toys and clothes. It was amazing.”
It is the passion of his community that is driving this second bid. He feels he has got the tools to work with people and find solutions that will work for all the residents of Ward 3, and that includes planting more trees in Clearview.
