Ward 2’s By-Election is racking up a plethora of talented people willing to serve the community, and Dirk Soeterik is no exception. He’s smart, energized, and polished with out the formality. We sit down to our talk with ease.

Dirk was born in Toronto, and he lived in the Beaches community. He is the middle child, with sisters on either side. His parents who were both immigrants from Holland arrived in the Canada in 1963. His mom, who was Miss Holland, became a realtor, and his dad was also a realtor. However, his dad's true passion was art and being an artist.

Like many children of the late 60’s Dirk’s parents divorced, and he lived with his mom, with dad being close by. He graduated from Jarvis Collegiate. After high school his mom decided to move back to Holland, and he went along to help out. During that time he took satellite courses from Webster University. He graduated with a degree in journalism.

Dirk had a natural ability in the digital world, and helped build the Toronto website, Canoe.ca. From 2000 to 2005 he was the digital editor at the Hockey News. The Dirk worked for Tim Hortons, and now he is the Digital Strategist for PwC. He works out of the new PwC Oakville office located just south of the QEW and west of the Trafalgar Road.

Dirk moved to Oakville with his wife, a professional photographer, in 2006. Their first home was in Lakeshore Woods, and then in 2011 he moved to West Oakville. They moved for a larger yard, and a larger home. He and his wife have two daughters.

Locally Dirk’s community involvement includes being the vice chair of the Santa Claus Parade, and coaching soccer for the Oakville Soccer Club.

When he first came to Oakville he attended the Santa Claus Parade Committee meeting. “The first person I met was Pam Damoff, and I said to her, 'I’ve always wanted to be a mascot in a parade.’ Well that year my wish came true.”

Our community is at a cross roads, and Dirk wants to ensure that his children will be able to enjoy Oakville when they grow up and raise their own family.
