On Monday, March 20, 2017 the Town of Oakville promoted it's Diversity Initiative Report, which was originally presented on November 7, 2016 to the Town of Oakville's Administrative Services Committee. The report provides a better understanding of the make up of Oakville, and how the town is responding to the changes.

The staff report focused on four key areas:

  1. How is programming and administration supporting diversity in the town
  2. Reviewing the programs and processes of inclusion that are underway
  3. Reviewing the latest census data from 2011 and how the community has changed since 2006
  4. Providing a preview of what diversity may look like in 2031

Oakville has changed significantly since the 2006 census. As of 2011, 31 percent of Oakville residents are now immigrants and 24 percent are visible minorities, which is an increase of 36 percent since 2006. It is expected that by 2031 that 1 in 4 residents will have been born abroad and English or French will not be their first language. In 2011 12 percent of Oakville residents reported that they did not speak english at home.

The town is also moving forward with a number of initiatives such as those for the LGBTQ community which has included gender neutral bathroom signage. ServiceOakville is now equipped to support requests in 150 languages through Language Line. In 2016 primary languages used were Ukrainian, Mandarin, Spanish and Hungarian.

All areas were reviewed and included hiring practices, recreation accommodations and adaptations, cultural events, and the delivering of services.
