Congratulations to Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School’s Grade 11 student, Kassandra Bot, who received a gold medal in Architectural Design at the Skills Ontario Competition, held at RIM Park in Waterloo on May 4-6, 2015. Kassandra was able to move forward to Skills Ontario after winning gold at the Halton Skills Competition that took place at Craig Kielburger Secondary School on April 9, 2015.
The purpose of the Architectural Technology and Design contest is to assess the technical skills of each competitor, in performing design and drawing tasks, as well as their skills and knowledge in the core teachings of Architecture and Engineering, with an understanding of regulatory building codes and construction.
95% of the evaluation is practical, based on the competitors’ Computer Aided Design & Drafting (CADD) skills, and their sketching techniques, as well as 5% of the evaluation is based on their resume and job interview skills.
As a result of the assessments, Kassandra won gold at Skills Ontario and was awarded with a $500 bursary for achieving the highest grade amongst all female participants. She also received a $1500 bursary for achieving the highest score amongst all participants in the entire competition.
Kassandra aspires to pursue a career path in Engineering, but has always appreciated the hands-on learning components of Architectural Design. She hopes that these skills will help her to one day design and build her own house. When asked if she intends on defending her gold medal at the competition next year, Kassandra replied, “Absolutely!”
