Once the polls closed at 9:00 PM it didn't take long for the Liberals to come out in the lead and stay there for the rest of the night. Oakville followed suit and returned Kevin Flynn to the Ontario legislature. Incumbent Ted Chudleigh was swept away in the Liberal wave of support by Indira Naidoo-Harris who becomes the new voice of Halton.
This was the second time that Kevin Flynn came up against PC Larry Scott. In 2011 he beat Mr. Scott by 4500 votes and received 47.89 percent of the vote. This election Mr. Flynn won by 8,900 votes with 49.43 percent of the vote.
For the people in Oakville North, Indira Naidoo-Harris has become the newly elected MPP. She won the Halton riding by 5700 votes with 44.64 percent of the vote. The riding which started out with a decidedly more rural sensibility, has changed to a more suburban community which felt more comfortable with the Liberal message.
Mr. Chudleigh represented the Halton riding since 1999 when it was first formed, for a total of four terms. His loss marked a significant change for the fortunes of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario.
In Mr. Flynn's acceptance speech to a crowd of supporter's at the Operating Engineers Hall off Speers Road he graciously thanked the people for returning him to office. He noted that this was the first time that Oakville had elected a liberal for four consecutive terms.
Now that the election is over, and the numbers are counted, the Liberal Party of Ontario will be expected to implement a very ambitious mandate: increasing services including a new Ontario pension plan as well as tackling a deficit that is becoming unwieldy. They have four years to prove to the people of Ontario that they supported the right political party in 2013 by giving the Liberal Party a majority government.
