Shan Weerasinghe joined the race to become town councillor for Ward 6 on May 29th. This is his second attempt to become the councillor for Ward6. His first run was in Oakville's 2014 municipal election.

Shan Weerasinghe came to Oakville in 2002. He and his wife decided that Oakville was an excellent place to raise a family with its good schools and safe neighbourhoods. In 2009 they moved into Joshua Creek with their two children who are attending the local public school.

“I believe a candidate should live in the ward,” said Shan when asked why he wanted to run for town council. “It is important to know what it means to live here, and have the same issues as your neighbour.”

Shan also brings with him a solid education in business management from Siri Lanka’s National Institute in Business Management. In Australia, he was working towards a university degree in marketing and economics, but received his immigration papers for Canada before completion, and wanted to join his wife. Life in Canada was tough but more than worth it according to Shan. “I was working two full time jobs to make ends meet,” he states with pride.

There are several issues that are driving Mr. Weerasinghe, which are implementing an neighbourhood watch, creating a more sustainable community, and creating an orientation program to help new Canadians in Oakville adapt to Canadian cultural expectations.
