The Ontario government officially announced in mid-January it is undertaking a review of eight regional municipalities, which includes Halton Region. The government states it is taking steps to ensure that regional governments are working efficiently and effectively.
Council believes Oakville is a model of municipal efficiency and effectiveness. The review has the potential to lead to measures that could weaken Oakville's strong and healthy finances and make our local government less efficient, effective, and connected to our residents.

Changes proposed to the Growth Plan
The provincial government is proposing changes to the Greater Golden Horseshoe Growth Plan that can impact how and where growth can happen in future.
These changes can result in a new round of urban sprawl in our communities, which in turn increases gridlock and lessens our ability to provide transit. As the review progresses, Council hopes the Province will realize that it has not been keeping up with its duty to support growth with the necessary schools, transportation infrastructure, transit and more.
Growth should pay for itself, and currently taxpayers are paying about 25 per cent of growth costs while developers profit. Council has been working hard to cut the rate of growth of Oakville's population in half so we grow at a pace that does not strain Oakville's infrastructure and greenspace.
