Our popular parent conference will be held Saturday, October 18, 2014, highlighted by two keynote speakers who will be addressing the event’s topic, Year of the Family.
The 7th annual Parent Involvement Committee Conference (PIC) involves workshops that share effective practices and provides opportunities for parents to re-focus on the role of families in the development of students of all ages.
This year’s conference will include two keynote speakers. Mary-Jean Gallagher is the Assistant Deputy Minister from the Student Achievement Division at the Ministry of Education and George Couros is the Division Principal for Parkland School Division in Alberta and an Innovative Teaching, Learning, and Leadership consultant.
Gallagher brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, sharing her insights on Improving Student Achievement: What Makes the Difference? Couros will share how parent involvement is critical for student success and how schools are integrating technology/social media to support learning.
The Year of the Family conference theme will provide a variety of new workshops and will also include some that have been well received by parents in years past. Topics include discussing one’s digital footprint on the Internet, what a 21st century classroom looks like and literacy activities for adolescents. Child minding is available upon request for children three years and older.
“The Parent Involvement Committee, an important link between our parent communities and our school board, provides a regular opportunity for parents to network, share ideas, offer input and enjoy informative presentations on education and related topics throughout the school year,” says Superintendent Rob Eatough. “We have selected this year’s PIC theme in support of the United Nations 20th anniversary of the International Year of the Family. The theme provides opportunities to highlight the many ways parents, governments, school boards and community partners can work together to better support the education, health and overall welfare of our children in the 21st century.”
