At a special meeting of Council on Monday, May 7th, Peter Longo was appointed as the new Ward 4 Town Councillor. The appointment is effective immediately and Councillor Longo will remain in office until November 30th, the end of the current Council term. Councillor Longo was also appointed to the Administrative Services Committee and will attend the May 22 meeting.

Councillor Peter Longo, a 16-year resident of Oakville, is the current chair of the Halton Region Natural Heritage Advisory Committee, past chair of the regional Ecological and Environmental Advisory Committee and was a member of the Stakeholder Advisory Committee for Official Plan Amendment 198. On April 3, Town Council officially declared the Ward 4 Town Councillor seat vacant and voted to fill the vacancy by appointment. Under the Municipal Act, an appointment to fill a vacancy must be made within 60 days of declaring the seat to be vacant. The town’s procedure for filling vacancies on Town Council notes that between January 1 of a regular election year and 90 days prior to voting day, the vacant position will be filled by appointment only. The Ward 4 seat was declared vacant following the resignation of former councillor Roger Lapworth on March 29.

Roger Lapworth resigns from Council effective March 30th

The appointment process involved candidates submitting nomination papers, resumes and the required supporting documents, with 17 candidates in total applying for the position. Each candidate also had the opportunity to speak at last night’s Council meeting to state why he or she would be the best candidate for the position.

For the next term of Council which runs from December 1, 2018 to November 14, 2022, the Ward 4 position will be filled through the 2018 Municipal Election on October 22. The nomination deadline is July 27 at 2 p.m. Visit elections.oakville.ca for more information.
