Oakville students with the Halton District School Board recently participated in the Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF) in Hamilton and performed very well, capturing numerous top-three finishes, qualifying for national and international competitions, and Best-in-Fair awards. Hundreds of students took part in the ArcelorMittal Dofasco-sponsored at Mohawk College, where more than $200,000 worth of prizes were awarded.

The ArcelorMittal Dofasco Pinnacle Best-in-Fair Award was won by Sabrina Mogus from Emily Carr Public School (Grade 7). Her project was, ‘Don’t FEAST on Your FLEECE’. She also won an all-expenses paid trip to the Canada-Wide Science and Engineering Fair in Regina, Saskatchewan in May.
Second Best in Fair was won by Jack Mogus from Garth Webb Secondary School (Grade 11). His project was, ‘G - GLOVE: An Environmentally Friendly and Cost Effective Alternative to Present Day Surgical Gloves’. Mogus won an all-expenses paid trip to the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles, California in May.
Arielle Ainabe, also a Garth Webb Secondary School student, qualified for ISEF, all expenses paid, with her exhibit, From a Single Moment of Force to Sustainable Energy: Achieving Optimal Frequency for Piezoelectricity.
The following Oakville students qualified for the Canada-Wide Science Fair:
Maple Grove Public School’s Andrew Probert for, Can the Theory of Garage Doors and Folding Doors be Used to Create A Dock?; and
Maple Grove Public School’s Kailas Chari for, Can Spices Control Fungal Growth?.
Other students received cash and scholarship prizes, invitations to technology camps and a meeting with a patent lawyer. See attached for the list of Halton results.
