Strong showing by Oakville students at 57th annual Bay Area Science Engineering Fair in Hamilton

Oakville students with the Halton District School Board recently participated in the Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF) in Hamilton and performed very well, capturing numerous top-three finishes, qualifying for national and international competitions, and Best-in-Fair awards. Hundreds of students took part in the ArcelorMittal Dofasco-sponsored at Mohawk College, where more than $200,000 worth of prizes were awarded.

Halton highlights included:

The ArcelorMittal Dofasco Pinnacle Best-in-Fair Award was won by Sabrina Mogus from Emily Carr Public School (Grade 7). Her project was, ‘Don’t FEAST on Your FLEECE’. She also won an all-expenses paid trip to the Canada-Wide Science and Engineering Fair in Regina, Saskatchewan in May.

Second Best in Fair was won by Jack Mogus from Garth Webb Secondary School (Grade 11). Second Best in Fair was won by Jack Mogus from Garth Webb Secondary School (Grade 11). His project was, ‘G - GLOVE: An Environmentally Friendly and Cost Effective Alternative to Present Day Surgical Gloves’. Mogus won an all-expenses paid trip to the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles, California in May.

Arielle Ainabe, also a Garth Webb Secondary School student, qualified for ISEF, all expenses paid, with her exhibit, From a Single Moment of Force to Sustainable Energy: Achieving Optimal Frequency for Piezoelectricity.

The following Oakville students qualified for the Canada-Wide Science Fair:

Maple Grove Public School’s Andrew Probert for, Can the Theory of Garage Doors and Folding Doors be Used to Create A Dock?; and
