Sustainable choice including a smart commute saves you time & money

This year, people who live and work in Oakville can discover how much they can save driving to work, school or an event with at least one other person by joining other GTHA commuters in celebrating Carpool Week, February 3-9.

“Halton Region’s Smart Commute Halton program, in partnership with Metrolinx, reinforces the Region’s commitment to supporting and preserving vibrant communities and the natural environment,” said Regional Chair Gary Carr. “With 20 Halton business members, Smart Commute Halton is reducing the number of cars on our road, preventing greenhouse gas emissions and saving people money by encouraging employers to take advantage of the CarpoolZone.ca program. If driving is the best option for your commute, try carpooling to save money, time and reduce your impact on the environment. Carpool Zone makes it easy to find a ride match and to track the impact of your commuting habits.”

In 2013, 20 Smart Commute Halton member businesses eliminated 487,388 km of road travel (that distance is more than 12 times around the world); prevented 105,827 kg of greenhouse gas emissions (that weighs more than 9.5 school buses); and saved almost $314,533 in commuter costs.

This Carpool Week, the Halton community can visit CarpoolZone.ca, a free, online carpool matching system from Smart Commute, and find their match for Carpool Week. Smart Commute is a program of Metrolinx and the municipalities in the GTHA whose goal is to ease gridlock, improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions while making commuting less expensive and more enjoyable, helping support the objectives in Metrolinx’s regional transportation plan, The Big Move. To date, more than 300 employers with 700,000 employees have signed on to the program and are designated as Smart Commute workplaces. For more information, visit smartcommute.ca.
