Now that we've selected a contemporary theme, it's time to choose the actual materials and furnishings which will be used. This is an important step in the street design process and we want to hear from you.
Come to our public meeting at Town Hall
Tuesday March 1, 2016 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the South Atrium of Town Hall.
Learn about how we got here, what's next, and then, best of all, check out some of the furniture and material choices planned for downtown and tell us what you think.
We'll have two contemporary design palettes to review and some sample streetscape materials such as pavers, benches, bollards, bike rings, recycling stations, and lights on display.
Another public meeting will take place this spring to present the final selections. These furnishings and materials will also be used going forward as other streets in downtown Oakville are reconstructed.

Background
The Lakeshore Road Reconstruction and Streetscape Project was approved as part of the Downtown Transportation and Streetscape Study (DTS) which looked at the configuration and current traffic and roadway conditions in downtown Oakville. It looked at ways to enhance the roadways, beautify streets, improve pedestrian and cycling facilities by introducing new design standards as well as increasing connectivity, mobility and accessibility in the downtown. The Lakeshore Road reconstruction will be implemented over two years starting in 2019. The Lakeshore Bridge Rehabilitation Project is anticipated to begin in 2017.

The completed DTS study approved several changes in the downtown including:
- Streetscape master plan for the road network in downtown Oakville including pedestrian and cycling facilities
- Lakeshore Road cross section
- Two-way conversion of the existing street network in downtown Oakville
- Contemporary pallette of street furnishings

News Release: Council takes steps forward on Lakeshore Road reconstruction projects - November 4, 2015
Project Update
Detailed engineering and design work is the first step to a more usable, beautiful downtown streetscape. The town hired MMM Group to create the detailed design and procurement package for the reconstruction and streetscaping of Lakeshore Road (Navy Street to Allan Street), and Brook Mcllroy, the consultants on the Downtown Transportation and Streetscape Study, who will work with MMM Group to complete the detailed streetscape drawings and finalize street materials and furnishings. The public will be invited to review the streetscape materials and furnishings before final decisions are made.
In preparation for the detailed design, the team will be actively working downtown over the next few months on the following items:
- Topographic survey of road and boulevard
- Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) investigation
- Surface paint markings for utilities in the boulevard and road including survey of location
- Test hole excavations to locate utilities will be conducted in the boulevard and road using a hydro vac truck
- Ground Penetrating Radar may be used within the boulevard to locate utilities
- Video inspection (CCTV) of storm sewers
- Drilling boreholes along the road for the Geotechnical investigation
- Tree survey
