The Halton Catholic District School Board is pleased to announce this year’s recipients of the annual Governor General Bronze Medal, awarded to the student graduating with the highest average from each secondary school. The average is calculated based on the final marks in all Grade 11 and Grade 12 courses, as listed on the student’s official Transcript of Grades issued by the Ministry of Education.
"We are so proud of the extraordinary achievements of our students," says Paula Dawson, Director of Education. "Receiving this medal of honour is truly a noteworthy accomplishment, which demonstrates the unwavering dedication and commitment to excellence in our award recipients. We wish all of our students continued success as they embark on their post-secondary pathways."
The 2016 recipients of the Governor General award for the Halton Catholic District School Board in Oakville are:
- Zhengxuan Lai of Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School who achieved a 97.06% average
- Mary Tina Hoang of St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Secondary School who achieved a 96.06% average
- Sviatoslav Leniuk of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School who achieved 96.64% average
For over 130 years, the Governor General’s Academic Medals have recognized the outstanding scholastic achievements of students across Canada. They are awarded to the student graduating with the highest average from high school (Bronze Medal), as well as from approved college or university programs (silver at the undergraduate and gold at the graduate level). Lord Dufferin, Canada’s third Governor General after Confederation, created the Academic Medals in 1873 to encourage academic excellence across the nation.
