2016 was a busy year in Oakville from Missing Persons to New Restaurants, and everything in between. For Oakville News we introduced two new writers: R. Beltzner who has been a excellent reviews on the latest cars to hit the streets, and Tyler Collins who has become our first class movie reviewer.
So here is the list of this year's top stories:
- A female teenager went missing and police requested the publics assistance, and 48,000 plus people read the article making it our most read story of the year.
- On April 1, 2016 we released our yearly April Fools Fake News Story, which got a number of you extremely hot and bothered: Oakville Toll Booths Approved by Town Council. 20,000 people decided to read about this story.
- The top story for events was Victoria Day Long Weekend 2016, which is the same as 2015. The unfortunate part is that there is no major celebration that happens in town, since there are at least 6,000 decision makers looking for an activity. If you are thinking of organizing a major event in Oakville - Victoria Day Long Weekend would be the day to pick.
- The most read human interest story was about the 10 year old girl who is suffering from catastrophic injuries after being hit by a bus. Her father's heart wrenching update made a number of us reach out and help via her GoFundMe Campaign. So far over $40,000 has been put aside for Rosie's recovery.
- Kelly Wolfendale Obituary touched thousands of local residents, and author Jim Hoare did a heartfelt job by giving us all a better understanding of her wonderful spirit. She will be missed and fondly remembered.
- A residential development story hit nerves across the town, and surprised a number of councillors. Fraser Damoff set off a fire storm when he wrote: Oakville Town Council should be ashamed over Saw-Whet.
- The top business story was about the arrival of UBER in Oakville. We took an indepth look at what UBER was all about, and it received a considerable number of reads. We did a poll and 82 percent of respondents believed UBER was a good thing for Oakville.
- The food story of the year was the arrival of fine foods retailer Pusateri's opening its doors in Oakville Place. It is nice to live in a town that cares so much about good food.
- Weather is always a hot topic for residents, and the Special Weather Advisory for February 24, 2016 caused the most interest. Question is does anyone remember the storm now?
- Finally, our top health story came out of Halton Region when West Nile Virus was first determined to be in Oakville for 2016.
The top stories for 2017 are about to be written. What will they be is anyone's guess? There are a few likely contenders, though the top one might just be the redevelopment of Glen Abbey Golf Course.
