Town to recommence public consultation on furniture & streetlight options for downtown

I would like to thank all of you who communicated with council members to support my motion for reconsideration of the furniture & streetlight options.

On July 25, 2016, Town Council passed a motion directing staff to:

Recommence a public engagement process this fall with traditional, classical and contemporary furniture options — streetlights, benches, bike rings and bollards - for the project.

Develop options for Lakeshore Road that would provide, in whole or in part, a flexible (curbless) street.

This additional opportunity for feedback will not have any effect on the timing of the Lakeshore rebuilding.

Public Consultation coming this fall

Be sure to have your say. Staff are expected to report back on both items in early 2017. The following public engagement opportunities regarding the furniture themes are being scheduled;

  1. Downtown Oakville Farmer’s Market on Saturday, September 10 and Saturday, September 17
  2. Sixteen Mile Sports Complex on Wednesday, September 14
  3. Iroquois Ridge Community Centre on Thursday, September 15
  4. QEP Community and Cultural Centre on Wednesday, September 21
  5. Glen Abbey Community Arena on Thursday, September 22
  6. There will also be a public open house at Town Hall on Tuesday, September 20, from 6 – 8 p.m.

At all of these events, staff will set up display boards featuring sample furniture photos representing each style, and will ask visitors/residents to select the style they like the best. There will also be a similar photo library and online voting option on the towns website.

Once finalized, the new streetscape materials and furnishing are to be used as part of the Lakeshore Road Reconstruction and Streetscape Project slated to start in 2019, and for other streets in downtown Oakville as they are reconstructed in the future. The new curbs and pavers will be included when the town undertakes to rehabilitate the Lakeshore Road Bridge at Sixteen Mile Creek starting in early 2017, including the roadway approaches between Navy Street and Forsythe Street.
