A Winter Storm Watch for Saturday, January 19-2019, was re- issued by Environment Canada on January 18-2019 at 10:40 AM.

They are expecting a major storm to track south of Lake Ontario, and with it significant snowfall. The snow begins falling Saturday morning and ends Saturday night.

Currently, Environment Canada's analysis indicates that significant snowfall accumulation will be from Hamilton to Niagara Falls, due to the North-East wind. Wind speed will vary from 40 km/h to 60 km/h. Temperatures will plummet during Saturday making minus 10 feel like minus 20. This may trigger an extreme cold alert.

The expectation, Oakville may not be hit; however, everything west of us is expected to be treacherous. Environment Canada's watch is still in place as of 10:40 AM - January 18-2019

For any major weather event be prepared. Keep your family are safe. Find preparedness information on Halton Region's Website.

Five items you should have at home:

  1. Water: supply for each person for 3 days
  2. Food: non-perishable, and requires little effort or energy to prepare - enough to cover 3 days.
  3. First aid: available at most supply stores such as Canadian Tire. Don't forget personal hygiene items, non-prescription drugs along with prescription drugs.
  4. Tools and supplies from candles, matches to a multi-tool pocket knife. (see the regional website)
  5. Clothing & bedding should keep you warm and dry

If you are driving have a car survival kit. Again the information is on the Region's website.

Here are some suggestions for your car survival kit:

  1. booster cables
  2. vehicle fluids
  3. emergency flares
  4. a survival candle
  5. blanket and first aid equipment
  6. highway help sign

Environment Canada's Winter Storm Watch continues with:

Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery.

Winter storm watches are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather are expected to occur together.
