Environment Canada issued a wind warning at 3:15 PM on Saturday, February 23rd for Sunday, February 24th.

Rain starts late Saturday evening. Rain continues through the night ending mid-morning. We reach a high of plus 9. It doesn't last for long. The sun breaks through the clouds by late morning/early afternoon on Sunday. The clouds return by mid to late Sunday afternoon.

The strong winds start as the sun starts to shine. The sustained wind speed will range from the low 50's to the high 50's (km/h). These sustained winds are forecast to last until mid afternoon on Monday, February 25th.

The main reason of this weather warning are the wind gusts. The gusts are expected to hit 80 km/h. There are a few weather models predicting gusts could reach 110 km/h. These strong gusts are predicted to start as the sun breaks through on Sunday, and last until mid-afternoon on Monday.

The south-west wind ushers in colder air. Temperatures drop by mid-evening on Sunday to zero. This is an issue because there is a 40 per cent chance of rain beginning by mid-afternoon. As the temperature drops to the freezing mark, it also means we go from rain to snow. The middle part is when things get problematic. We might see a period of ice rain.

Effects of 70 to 90 km/h winds:

  1. breaking of smaller branches
  2. high waves on the lake
  3. unsecured objects tumbling over

Effects of 90 to 110 km/h winds:

  1. falling branches
  2. uprooting trees
  3. scaffolding can topple over

Power Outages

Power outages are possible, if falling branches or trees break power lines.
