After 30 years Charlotte Meissner, CEO of the Oakville Public Library (OPL), retired on August 12, 2016. During her tenure she over saw some of the most dynamic changes in the way residents read and access information. She led the OPL in the development of a transformative strategic plan. She introduced the concept of digital hubs and expanded digital services to address evolving public expectations.
When Charlotte started at the Oakville Public Library in 1986, Glen Abbey, Iroquois Ridge and Clearview branches were not built. The internet was a concept, and not accessible to the public. An E-Book was science fiction.
In 2015 the Oakville Public Library had cardholders digitally access 245,752 items (eBooks, eAudiobooks, magazines, music, movies, TV shows) up 12.5%. The Print circulation was 1,140,705 (physical books, magazines, large print, book club kits), and the non-print circulation was 590,991 (DVD’s, Books on CD, Music CD’s, Talking Books, energy meters, kits and electronic games). More than 500 residents have used the 3D printers, and 60,978 users have engaged in OPL programs. Approximately 205 residents make use of the Library's free WiFi everyday. The Oakville Public Library has changed dramatically over Charlotte's tenure.
“On behalf of the board, we want to thank Charlotte for her dedication and commitment to the library and are tremendously grateful to her leadership over the past several years,” said Councillor Jeff Knoll, OPL Board Chair. “She is leaving the OPL in excellent condition, and I have every confidence that things will continue to run smoothly over these next few months as we transition to the next CEO.”
Recruitment for the CEO position will begin immediately. Lynn Horlor, director, Financial Operations, from the Town of Oakville, will be the interim CEO until the role is filled.
