Downtown Oakville Towne Square design moves forward

Towne Square | Town of Oakville
Towne Square | Town of Oakville

A final design for the Downtown Oakville's Towne Square is going to council for final approval in May.

The design process started several years ago. In June 2018 several designs were presented to the public and stake holders. The stakes holders included landlords and business owners. The design and subsequently the completed project needed to work for everyone.

The final design is considered preferred until council votes. The design's theme is "Turning Leaves". The design was presented at a public meeting on April 9th.

Towne Square Highlights:e

  • a central lawn area
  • new tree plantings
  • assorted horticultural garden beds
  • new prominent water feature
  • paved, accessible ramp
  • a mixture of fixed and flexible seating

Initially the reconstruction of the square was expected to happen after the completion of the reconstruction and new Streetscape of Lakeshore Road. This changed.  It was determined that the cost of  the square's reconstruction would be considerably more, if the two projects were done separately.

Re-Design Time Line

  1. June 2018 - several  preliminary plans presented to the public
  2. November 2018 to January 2019 - Those several designs with the input of the public and stakeholders were combined to create two designs.
  3. January 2019 to March - the town held several round tables with community, which lead to the preferred final concept presented on April 9th.
