On October 1, 2019 Nishan Duraiappah Halton's Deputy Chief of Police becomes the next Peel Regional Chief of Police. He has been in law enforcement for 25 years, and became the Deputy Chief in 2015. He becomes the second Peel Regional Police Chief from outside the Peel's Police Department.

Duraiappah worked with federal counterparts on the RCMP Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit. In his capacity as Halton Police Diversity and Cultural Relations Coordinator, he showed a strong commitment to many of the region’s diverse cultural and faith-based communities.
“Deputy Chief Duraiappah represents the next generation of leadership for the police service,” said Nando Iannicca, Chair of the Peel Police Service Board. “The community we all serve expects nothing less than the highest degree of duty and integrity – the very qualities we saw in Deputy Chief Duraiappah during the hiring process.”
For the past seven months the Peel Police Board interviewed numerous candidates for the Chief's position. The interim Chief Chris McCord stepped in when the past chief retired. McCord remains with Peel as the Deputy Police Chief.
“It’s truly an honour to serve the over 3000 members of the Peel Regional Police Service as their Chief,” said incoming Chief Duraiappah. “As a team, we look forward to serving this remarkable and diverse community for many years to come.”

Nish has been an incredible member and leader within the Halton Regional Police Service throughout his 25 year career and will be greatly missed. But, at the same time, we wish him all the best in his new role and in all future endeavors which will come his way as he continues as a recognized police leader here at home and across Canada.
Nish has played an instrumental role in building the strong senior leadership team we have within the HRPS. That team will continue to meet and exceed our goals to continue to be the safest large municipality in all of Canada as we serve the citizens of Halton.
