The Halton District School Board will be hosting its 2014 For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics kickoff next month.

Approximately 400 students, teachers, community mentors and parents are expected to attend the Saturday, January 4, 2014 kickoff, starting at 9 a.m. at the New Street Education Centre (3250 New Street, Burlington). Students and mentors will receive this year’s challenge and will have six weeks to build their team’s robot before taking it to competitions across North America.

During the January 4 event, two local companies, who have sponsored two winning teams this past year, will be recognized: Burlington Central and Eaton, and Oakville Trafalgar and Hatch. As well, the Board will be recognizing State Farm for their generous donation of $100,000 to the Halton District School Board's expansion of robotics from Kindergarten through Grade 12.

The Board will be unveiling its partnership with Innovate Burlington by rolling out a new pilot certification for students involved in the robotics programs. This Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship certification is part of the Halton District School Board’s Specialist High Skills Major Manufacturing programs.
