Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides will hold its annual Fall Open House on Saturday, October 14th to provide the public with an inside look into the work and training of a Dog Guide. Dog Guide demonstrations from each of the Foundation’s six programs will be featured.
“I came to an open house six years ago and after watching the demonstrations I knew I wanted to be part of the organization,” says Anna, a long time Dog Guides Canada volunteer. “I was particularly moved after seeing a client and her Service Dog Guide, and hearing about what a difference the dog had made in her life.”
The Open House will run from 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m., and will include training demonstrations, family- friendly activities, future Dog Guide puppies to visit with, and a silent auction. There is no need to register to attend this year’s Fall Open House. Tours will be held throughout the day, and are approximately one hour in length. The Open House is a free event, although the Foundation is accepting donations in support of its six Dog Guide programs:
- Canine Vision, for people who are blind or visually impaired Hearing Ear, for people who are deaf or hard of hearing Service, for people with a physical disability Seizure Response, for people who have epilepsy Autism Assistance, for children (aged 3-12) on the autism spectrum Diabetic Alert, for people who have type 1 diabetes with hypoglycemic unawareness
While each Dog Guide costs an average of $25,000 to raise, train and place, they are provided free of charge to qualifying applicants. Lions Foundation of Canada receives no government funding and relies solely on donations from individuals, corporations, and fundraising activities.
