At a Special Board meeting on Wednesday, June 24, 2015, trustees with the Halton District School Board announced the appointment of Jacqueline Newton as Superintendent of Education, effective August 24, 2015. Newton’s appointment fills the vacancy created with the departure of Yaw Obeng to head a school district in Burlington, Vermont.
Jacqueline Newton is currently the Principal of Dr. Frank J. Hayden Secondary School in Burlington, and was the inaugural principal of that school when it opened in September 2013. Prior to her assignment to Dr. Frank J. Hayden Secondary School, Newton served as principal at Nelson and Iroquois Ridge High Schools.
Before her appointment as principal in 2004, Newton served as vice-principal at TA Blakelock and Lord Elgin High Schools. In all assignments, Newton has been known as a student-centred leader and an innovator. This was especially demonstrated in her assignment to build the culture at the new Dr. Frank J. Hayden Secondary School where a team approach has been fostered by all staff, and student voice is valued in decision making.
Early in her career, Jacqui taught at the Faculty of Education (U of T) and most recently has been an instructor for the Principals’ Qualifications Program. She has served as chair of the Leadership Skills committee for secondary principals and is openly acknowledged for her progressive leadership and educational ideas.
“Jacqui is a skilled leader with creative and innovative ideas and problem solving capabilities,” says David Euale, Director of Education for the Halton District School Board. “She has demonstrated her dedication to students, parents and community in a variety of roles, and we are confident Jacqui will be an excellent complement to the senior admin team of the Halton District School Board.”
