As you may be aware, the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) reached a tentative agreement with the Ontario Public School Boards' Association and the Ontario government on November 2, 2015. Terms of the tentative agreements have not yet been made public and must still be ratified by ETFO and CUPE members. Local negotiations are ongoing.

Update on Elementary Progress Reports

We know that elementary school parents have questions about their children's November Progress Reports. The Central Tentative Agreement outlines that elementary teachers will complete progress reports. If the Central Tentative Agreement is ratified, teachers will be completing progress reports and distributing them on Friday, December 11, 2015. Please note that Fall Kindergarten reporting (e.g., goal setting forms) will not be completed as it was not specifically addressed as part of the Central Tentative Agreement. However, Senior Kindergarten observations will proceed as normal.

P.A. Day on November 27, 2015

The November P.A. day will go forward as a professional development day dedicated to staff learning. In the past, this day has been used for student-led conferencing with teachers and parents/guardians. However, as part of the Central Tentative Agreement teacher-parent interviews remain at the discretion of the teacher and will be initiated if the teacher has a concern about a student’s progress.

As always, parents are encouraged to contact their child’s teacher if they have any questions or concerns about their child’s progress. Teachers remain committed to ongoing communication with individual parents/guardians regarding student progress and development.

Although job action has ended for elementary teachers, we expect there will be a transition period as schools return to their regular routines. I want to assure you that our key priority remains working to ensure students have a successful school year. We appreciate your continued patience and understanding.
