With the reconstruction of Lakeshore Bridge over Sixteen Mile Creek complete, the town is ready to move ahead with the revitalization of the downtown core. The town will share the final streetscape design for the Lakeshore Road Reconstruction and Streetscape Project between Navy and Allan streets at an open house at Town Hall on December 7, 2017 before it goes to Council for approval in early 2018.
The downtown core revitalization open house is between 4 and 8 p.m. and will include:
- design of vehicle travel lanes, on-street parking, intersections, sidewalks and boulevard areas
- proposed placement of lighting and traditional street furnishings: streetlight poles, benches, bollards and bike rings
- placement of granite curbs and pavers
- street tree planting locations
- intersection treatments including pedestrian crossings
- business case for replacing existing streetlight poles
- options and a recommendation for flexible (curbless) street design
The design selections will be incorporated into the Lakeshore Road Reconstruction and Streetscape Project and the overall Downtown Transportation and Streetscape Master Plan for other roads in downtown as they are reconstructed.
Reconstruction of Lakeshore Road between Navy and Allan streets is scheduled to start in the spring 2019, and delivered in two phases:
- Phase 1 in 2019 (spring to fall) —between Navy and Dunn streets
- Phase 2 in 2020 (spring to fall) — between Dunn and Allan streets.
Background
With Lakeshore Road East (Navy Street to Allan Street) coming to the end of its lifespan and needing a major reconstruction, the town undertook extensive research and public consultation to identify broader opportunities to improve traffic, beautify streets and improve pedestrian/cycle ways in the downtown. This past February, Council approved the bridge railing, the lighting and the furniture selections (streetlight poles, benches, bollards, and bike rings). Part of the redevelopment included reconstruction of Lakeshore Road Bridge over Sixteen Mile Creek which was completed and reopened ahead of schedule on November 17, 2017.
