Livable by Design Awards handed out for Excellence in Urban Design

The Town of Oakville presented its Livable by Design Awards to eight projects representing outstanding urban design, heritage preservation and sustainable buildings.

“We are proud of all the 28 submissions and thank the project teams for creating buildings and spaces that are vibrant, sustainable and make Oakville even more livable,” said Mayor Rob Burton. “On behalf of Council, congratulations to this year’s award recipients; thank you for sharing your dedication to design excellence.”

Top honours for the Award of Excellence was shared between the Historic BMO (Anthropologie), located at 159 Lakeshore Road East, and The Shores, located at 1 Bronte Road. Both projects stood out for the Selection Committee for very different reasons. Members of the Selection Committee commented that the Historic BMO (Anthropologie) submission was an exemplary execution of heritage revitalization within downtown Oakville, while The Shores project was deserving of the award for its exemplary execution of a new mixed-use development within Bronte Village.

The Award of Distinction went to the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre for its community-driven adaptive reuse, and to the Uptown Oakville Transit Facility for crafting a striking architectural solution for a utilitarian facility.

The Selection Committee also introduced an Award of Merit for three very deserving projects: the LIUNA Centre for its contribution in sustainability by achieving a L.E.E.D. Gold certification, the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts Patio for creating a safe, convenient and accessible outdoor place associated with a civic facility, and Westwood Park for successfully revitalizing an under-used space and for contributing to place-making in Kerr Village

New this year, the Livable by Design Awards also gave Oakville residents an opportunity to choose their favourite project by voting for the Citizens’ Choice Award. The first recipient of this award is the project team for the North Oakville East Wastewater Pumping Station located on Dundas Street. In total, over 2,000 people took the time to cast their vote with the winner receiving the most votes.

The Town of Oakville’s Livable by Design Awards celebrate urban design, heritage preservation and sustainable building excellence in our community and recognize those who have developed and executed well-designed projects. The awards were handed out on Friday, November 8, 2013 at the Queen Elizabeth Community and Cultural Centre in celebration of World Town Planning Day.
