Oakville's Livable by Design Awards

Urban design is not just what a building looks like; it’s the creation of stimulating, thriving, vibrant buildings and places that give our community a sense of belonging and character. The Town of Oakville’s 2013 Livable by Design Awards returns this year to celebrate urban design excellence in our community and recognize those who have developed and executed well-designed projects. Urban designers, developers, project team members and the public are invited to submit eligible projects no later than noon, August 2, 2013.

“Oakville is a beautiful place to live, work, raise a family and retire. Our Livable Oakville Plan sets standards that ensure we create a vibrant, sustainable and livable community,” Mayor Rob Burton said. “We look forward to recognizing the work of those who help us achieve those standards by exemplifying urban design excellence in our town.”

To be eligible for the awards, the project must have been completed between July 1, 2007 and April 30, 2013, be located within the geographic limits of the Town of Oakville and be visible from areas accessible to the public. Submission details are available on the Livable by Design Awards — I want to submit a project page.

There will be one Livable by Design Award of Excellence presented for the project that represents design excellence and achieves the highest score according to the evaluation criteria. Other outstanding projects will receive a Livable by Design Award of Distinction.

The Livable by Design Award of Excellence and Award of Distinction are judged by a selection committee representing the disciplines of urban design, planning, architecture, landscape architecture, heritage and sustainable building. The Selection Committee looks for entries with outstanding design criteria such as: integration to surroundings, supporting sustainability and green building practices as well as showing creativity and innovation, and preserving cultural and natural resources.

In addition to the Award of Excellence and Award of Distinction, the town is launching the Citizens’ Choice Award this year. Oakville residents will be encouraged to vote for their favourite project. Photos of all submissions will be available on the town’s website for review, and on display at various town facilities. Cast your vote between September 9 and October 25, 2013.

The Livable by Design Awards will be presented on November 8, 2013, at the Queen Elizabeth Community and Cultural Centre in Oakville.
