Public Services and Procurement Minister: Anita Anand

Anita Anand, who ran for first time for elected office in 2019, has been appointed by Prime Minister Trudeau on November 20, 2019 as the Minister of Public Services and Procurement. She will be the first Oakville MP to be named to a cabinet position.

MP Anand is on leave from her role as a professor of law at the University of Toronto.

Anand was, at one time, the Associate Dean of Law and has served appointments at the Rotman School of Management and the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy.  Her specific expertise is the regulation of capital markets, including corporate governance and risk.

She is also a senior fellow of Massey College and served as the academic director of the Centre for the Legal Profession and its program on ethics in law and business.

Anand became the candidate after John Oliver decided not to run in early 2019. She was elected as Oakville's MP on Monday, October 21st when won 46.3% of the vote. Terence Young, the Conservative candidate came in second with 38.9% of the vote.

The Public Services and Procurement Ministry is responsible for five service categories for Federal Government. The ministry performs the following functions:

  • Buying and selling all types of goods and services for the Federal Government
  • Compensation services for federal departments, agencies, and public service pensioners
  • Managing government real property holdings, offering professional and technical real property services, and providing safe, healthy and productive working environments
  • Providing access to government information, coordinating advertising and public opinion research, shared corporate administrative systems and services and security screening services
  • Offering translation, revision, terminology and interpretation, and linguistic services
