Remembrance 2017 Bronte Cenotaph
The Royal Canadian Legion Bronte Branch 486 “Forever Remembered” our fallen comrades. The remembrance brought together Veterans, members of the Oakville community, the Armed Forces, RCMP, OPP, Halton Police, Oakville Firefighters, Knights of Columbus, Cadets, Scouts and Guides, and local dignitaries. Beginning at the Legion on Jones Street in Bronte, Oakville, parade participants marched to the Cenotaph on Lakeshore Road West at Bronte Harbour where a thoughtful and beautiful service recognized all Veterans and our deceased comrades.
Taking a moment to honour the men and women who fought for our freedom, the Last Post and Reveille were played by Fit. Sgt. Joshua Wright and a stirring rendition of In Flanders Fields was read by Blakelock Secondary School student Lauren Woolfrey. Many organizations remembered our Veterans by the Laying of the Wreaths. An Open House and light lunch were held at the Bronte Legion following the service and parade. Everyone was invited and welcomed.

Kristin Courtney, owner of MediChair Halton and organizer of the Veterans Luncheon commented; “I have noticed that it does not seem to be customary to capitalize the first letter of the word Veteran when referring to our Veterans who through their Military service have made and continue to make tremendous sacrifices for our country. I believe it is very important to capitalize Veteran when referring to those who have fought for our country to differentiate them from someone with much experience in a particular field.”
“It seems like such a small gesture, but I feel our Veterans are most worthy of this distinction.” Kristin continues, “I have thought about this for the past few years and felt compelled to do something this year, so I started this simple campaign late Thursday last week on Change.org to spell ‘Veteran’ with a capital V. (please see in blue below) I have sent out to about 5000 people in my data base, tweeted, put up on facebook, etc, texted the Motts show on Newstalk 1010 yesterday morning, and they talked about it on their show, then put the link to join the campaign on their website. I am doing whatever I can to get this going for our most deserving Veterans and appreciate any help available. Close to 500 have joined with many lovely comments on the site.”
