Earth Hour 2018
This Saturday, March 24 switch off your lights for Earth Hour 2018. The town encourages you to join households, businesses and landmarks from around the world and power down from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. in support of action on climate change.
“Every action we take – big or small – to conserve energy makes a positive difference on our community and the environment,” said Mayor Rob Burton. “On behalf of Council, I want to thank all of our residents for their contribution not only during Earth Hour, but also throughout the year. We encourage residents to continue finding ways to reduce their energy use in their daily lives.”
The town will be celebrating Earth Hour 2018 by turning off all non-essential lights and marquee signs at town facilities and parking lots where possible without compromising public safety or interfering with services.
Earth Hour 2018 actions:
- Switch off non-essential lights
- Unplug non-essential electronics (TVs, computers, device chargers, alarm clocks, etc.)
- Have a candlelit dinner
- Take an evening stroll
- Play games by flashlight
Post your activity on the Town of Oakville’s Facebook page and tweet @townofoakville.
Last year businesses, residents and the town reduced energy consumption by 3.6 percent (6.2 MegaWatts MW), the equivalent of turning off 100,000 60-watt light bulbs. Over the last 10 years we have saved a total of 85 MW, the equivalent of turning off 1.4 million 60-watt light bulbs!
Earth Hour is a global movement created by the World Wildlife Fund to encourage individuals, businesses and governments around the world to conserve energy. Earth Hour continues to gain traction with 178 counties, more than ever, participating last year. As many as 400 iconic global landmarks also went dark, including the Sydney Opera House, Eiffel Tower, Empire State Building and CN Tower. Residents, businesses and community groups are encouraged to register their Earth Hour event at earthhour.org.
