The YMCA of Oakville is currently seeking nominations for individuals and groups whose passion for a cause helps make our community a stronger, healthier place to live. Recognize the extraordinary individuals in our community who provide leadership to a cause, consistently give back to our community or stand up for the rights of others by nominating them for the YMCA Peace Medallion.
Last year, the YMCA recognized:
- Jack Yeilding of Jack’s Lemonade Stand (youth category)
- Julie Harmgardt, founder of InvisAbilities (adult category)
- Julie and Emma Mogus, sisters and founders of Books with no Bounds (group category).

Nominations are now being accepted in the following categories:
• Individual youth (19 years or younger)
• Individual adult (20+ years)
• Group (clubs, school groups etc.)
Nominations for YMCA Peace Medallions are due by Friday, October 25, 2013. Nomination forms are available at the Peter Gilgan Family YMCA at 410 Rebecca Street or online at ymcaofoakville.org.
Recipients of the 2013 YMCA Peace Medallion will be honoured during the YMCA Community Breakfast for Peace on Thursday, November 21 at the Oakville Conference Centre, and will receive a $500 bursary for their charitable work. The keynote speaker for the event will be Cheryl Perera, founder and president of OneChild, an organization empowering a movement of children and youth taking action against child sex slavery. For more than 25 years, YMCAs across Canada have been celebrating the third week in November as YMCA Peace Week. During this time, the YMCA of Oakville hosts activities that explore peace from a local and global level, including the YMCA Community Breakfast for Peace.
