Gain and Maintain: Learning Differences and Employment

How do you gain and keep up employment for students and young adults with intellectual disabilities and other learning differences, such as autism, dyslexia or ADHD?

The main issue for youth and young adults with learning differences—and for their parents, educators and professionals working with them—is how to cut higher unemployment rates and aid this growing population in gaining and maintaining employment.

Michael McManmon, founder of CIP Worldwide—a Career Internship Program—has accumulated a wealth of experience and practical knowledge. After 45 years of experience working with these young people, 17 years ago he was diagnosed with Asperger’s .

Based on his latest publication “M•PLOY"—a workbook on skills and curriculum for transitioning young adults to college, independent living and employment—Dr McManmon will share steps, helpful real-life stories, and skill building exercises that help un-employed or under-employed youth and young adults, parents, job coaches, teachers and professionals to help them gain employment.

Learn about finding a social, sensory, emotional, intellectual fit and how to look for the right employment that matches an individual’s profile.

See the eight main skills that employers look for:

  1. communication
  2. teamwork
  3. problem solving and critical thinking
  4. initiative and leadership
  5. planning and organizing
  6. self-management

A Q&A follows where Dr McManmon will address each concern and share the skills needed to get teens and young adults out of the house and into employment after graduation.

Presented by Autism Job Club, Autism Lifepath, The Oakville Centre, Oakville Public Library, A Different Drummer Books.

Shrek the Musical is a play for all ages focussing on universal acceptance of others in spite of appearances and first impressions.

Shrek is an ogre……a monster who uses symbolism to compare himself to an onion.

He talks of having layers and how many sides to him, but most people never look far enough. Shrek demonstrates that no matter what the world says about you, you can make a difference.

Indeed, Shrek proves that “it’s what inside that counts.”
