Oakville’s Culture Days created a time to celebrate creativity in the Oakville community. Free and interactive, the weekend featured concerts, activities, art and cultural displays galore.
Across Canada Culture Days is committed to reaching the goal of having all Canadians in every community declaring "I Love Culture" and making culture a daily habit. Culture Days is a grassroots nation-wide movement that aims to raise awareness, participation and engagement in the arts and cultural life of Canadian communities. Since its official launch in 2010, Culture Days has generated enthusiastic interest, participation and support from a rapidly growing network of artists, organizations, municipalities, as well as the private and public sector and media across the country.
A trip to Bronte Village by the Lake was enjoyed by many. It took the form of a sketching session in Bronte Harbour, belly dancing, children’s calk sidewalk art work at Trias Gallery, activities at the historical Sovereign House and inviting, friendly businesses. Mayor Burton cut the ribbon to announce the opening of Nina Duong Haute Couture. Every gown Nina creates is sewn by her hands – Be sure to visit! These are but a few of the delights that greeted visitors in Bronte during Culture Days.
Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre was also buzzing with outstanding performances, exhibits and activities for both adults and children. In partnership with the Oakville Arts Council and QEPCCC’s active members, residents were invited to enjoy Oakville’s many cultural forms. It was fun to be immersed in sounds of the Oakville Suzuki Association fiddles and the Canadian Caribbean Association’s steel pan performance or the Peter Pan performance in the Black Box Theatre. The people participating were of all ages – so was the audience, all invited to take advantage of FREE hands-on and behind-the-scenes activities that explored music, dance, visual arts and theatre!
The sun shone and so did Culture Days! According to Ann Sargent, Director of the Business Improvement Area for Bronte Village Oakville, “We support Culture Days in Bronte Village by the Lake Oakville and want to see it grow each year. Every business in our town has a cultural aspect to it and as we come to recognize the benefits of this awareness, we will have the opportunity to grow this event and make culture a daily habit.”
