Born from sorrow so deep: Pergolesi Stabat mater

The grief of a mother watching her only son suffer and die, the unspeakable emotions of Mary as she stood at the foot of the cross, translated into music, into one of the most profound works by Pergolesi—this is what Musikay offers you during this Lenten season.

Accompanied by a string orchestra, soprano Catherine Arcand-Pinette and alto Erika Bailey join their warm and delightful voices in performing the gorgeous Stabat mater by Pergolesi. The voices and the strings take you on a deeply profound musical journey through sorrow, pain, anger, and much more.

To open the concert, the orchestra performs Handel’s concerto grosso op. 6 no. 4 which mirrors some of the musical ideas and moods found in the Stabat mater, but also offers some joyous moments to counterpoint.

Both works are beautifully crafted. The harmonies are sublime and lines heavenly. Come listen and shed a tear or two by listening to Pergolesi and Handel’s music to replenish your soul while awaiting Spring.

Pergolesi Stabat mater will be performed on March 1st and 2nd, and tickets range in price from $15.00 to $35.00. Family tickets are also available. For more information please go on the website www.musikay.ca at or call (905) 825.9470.
