Parents, staff members and Grade 7-12 students are invited to attend a free book talk with world-renowned Canadian author Robert J. Sawyer on Thursday, December 4, 2014, starting at 6:30 p.m. at Burlington Central High School (1433 Baldwin Street). Doors open at 6 p.m.
Sawyer will be speaking about his book Flashforward, which participating Halton District School Board schools are reading this fall as part of HDSBReads. It’s a new program designed to bring Board staff and students together by reading one book.
"We are excited to launch our inaugural year of the HDSBReads program with an author as well-known as Robert J. Sawyer,” says Lynn Wisniewski, the Board’s Manager of Instructional Media. “Science fiction, with its futuristic settings, alternative possible worlds and radical scientific innovations, makes our selected title, Flashforward, captivating for many readers across the school board. Reading is such an important skill and provides the reader with so many benefits."
Flashforward is an award-winning novel about an experiment that goes awry at the CERN Research Facility and for a few moments the consciousness of the entire human race is thrown ahead by 20 years.
Sawyer is a Canadian science fiction writer who has 21 novels published. His short fiction has appeared in Analog Science Fiction and Fact, Amazing Stories, On Spec, Nature, and many anthologies. Sawyer has won the Nebula Award (1995), the Hugo Award (2003), and the John W. Campbell Memorial Award (2006). Sawyer will be signing copies of his book, which will be available for purchase.
