The Oakville & Milton Humane Society would like to update the community on the removal of 100 cats from a home in the Milton area which began on Thursday, September 5 continues today.

A warrant to remove the cats from the house at 16574 Steeles Avenue, Halton Hills was issued after the Oakville & Milton Humane Society received an anonymous tip from a member of the public about the home at this address that may have had as many as 200 cats living inside.

OSPCA Agent & OMHS Animal Protective Services Manager, Laura Mackasey attended the scene with a local veterinarian. It was determined that the animals needed to be removed immediately and OMHS staff attended to begin the removal process.

To date 80 cats have been removed from the home, have been examined by volunteer veterinarians and are being treated for any health concerns. There are approximately 20 cats remaining in the home which are being removed today and will be examined and cared for by the Oakville & Milton Humane Society. “Many of the cats were very timid and shy, so great care has to be taken to remove them with as little stress as possible” said Kim Millan, Executive Director for the Oakville & Milton Humane Society. In addition, 10 deceased cats were found in the house.

OSPCA Agent Laura Mackasey will be laying charges early next week in the investigation.

The Oakville & Milton Humane Society had 300 cats in their care before the removal. A temporary trailer was rented to accommodate the additional cats and the removal has severely stretched the resources of the shelter. A registered charity, the Oakville & Milton Humane Society receives no government funding or funding from any animal welfare organization to investigate and prosecute animal abuse, cruelty and neglect, or to care for animals in great need. The OMHS relies on the compassion and generosity of the community to “speak for those who cannot speak for themselves”.
