Four more wineries that took part in the Oakville Wine Enthusiasts Club (OWEC) esoterica wine fair in April traveled from Prince Edward County (PEC), and Lake Erie North Shore (LENS) wine appellations of Ontario - the warmest and most southern appellation in Canada.

Pelee Island Winery (LENS) makes many varieties of white and red wine following the Sustainable Vineyard Practice outlined by the World Wildlife Fund. They offer wine tasting at both their locations on the mainland in Kingsville, and on Pelee Island - the largest private estate in Canada with 550 acres. This winery has quite the history as the oldest estate winery in Canada beginning in 1866 as Vin Villa Winery which is now in ruins.

Family-run Sprucewood Shores Estate Winery (LENS) with 52 acres of land located on the shores of Lake Erie, located in Amherstburg, opened in November 2006. They grow many of the classic grape varieties including Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon - a very good choice.

The OWEC is planning a weekend “WinErie Tour” for this July with a tail-gate party, lunch on the beach, and wine tasting stops including both of these wineries. Check their website for details. Interesting fact: LENS is at the same latitude as Northern California and Tuscany, Italy.

Harwood Estate Vineyards (PEC) located in Hillier with three vineyards of European Vinifera and Mixed-Heritage (for example a cross of European vines with North American indigenous vines) vines like Frontenac Gris and Marquette, they are known as “The Solar Winery.” Their Winery, Tasting Bar, Barrel Cellar, Kitchen, and Crush Pad are all 100% solar-powered.

The OWEC is looking forward to Karlo Estates (PEC) from Wellington who is presenting again at this month’s meeting on Friday, May 30th. Email the club for guest tickets. Having tasted many of their artisanal wines, including their "Port" style wine, I can assure you this is one wine tasting you will want to check out!
