Lawrence Hill, author of The Book of Negroes, will deliver the inaugural Creative Campus Series address, “Mining Creativity: Perspectives from a Novelist and Screenwriter”, on Monday, January 19th at Sheridan’s Oakville campus. The Book of Negroes has been selected as the Sheridan Reads designated book for the winter term.
Hill’s address will take place in The Marquee from 6:30 – 9:30 pm. Admission is free and seating will be available on a first come, first served basis. The public is welcome to attend.
This event will kick off a series of Sheridan Reads events to take place over the winter term, including book club conversations across Sheridan’s campuses in Oakville, Brampton and Mississauga. Sheridan Reads will culminate in a ‘Closing Chapter’ event on April 8, featuring Lawrence Hill in conversation with Ralph Benmergui, former CBC personality and current Executive Advisor to Sheridan’s President.
About Lawrence Hill:
Lawrence Hill is the author of nine books. His 2007 novel The Book of Negroes won the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Book and both CBC Radio’s Canada Reads and Radio-Canada’s Combat des livres. In 2013, Hill wrote the non-fiction books Blood: the Stuff of Life (which formed the basis of his 2013 Massey Lectures). He has co-written a six-part television miniseries based on The Book of Negroes, which is currently appearing on CBC TV. He is in the process of completing a new novel.

Sheridan Reads is the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences’ signature contribution to Sheridan’s Creative Campus initiative, and will bring students, staff and faculty together with community groups, public libraries and service organizations in Mississauga, Oakville and Brampton to discuss and celebrate the work of writers from home and abroad.
Sheridan’s Creative Campus Series will host a selection of distinguished talks by dynamic speakers from a range of disciplinary and professional backgrounds; each installment will address a subject that is related to creativity and conducive to open interdisciplinary dialogue. Lawrence Hill’s address is the inaugural event in the series.
