It is rare to have a world renown opera singer perform in an intimate Oakville setting. Michael Schade who resides in Oakville and Vienna, Austria will be performing on Sunday, October 29, 2017.

Michael Schade was born to Hans and Liesel Schade of Gelsenkirchin, in Germany's Ruhr Valley. His musical training began at St.Michael's Choir School in Toronto, and upon graduation he went on to pre-med at the University of Western Ontario where his parents urged him to join the University Choir. After graduating UWO in 1988, Michael entered the Master's program at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. This led to his being invited to join the Merola Program, a company for the development of the most promising student opera singers run by the San Francisco Opera. Eventually, he was signed to the giant management firm Columbia Artists.

Mr. Schade first began singing with Canada's premier Opera companies, but it didn't take long for European Opera companies to notice this Canadian's talent. He has performed internationally at the Vienna State Opera, at the Metropolitan Opera in New York (debut in 1993 in Fidelio), Milan's La Scala, the San Francisco Opera, the Canadian Opera Company, the the Hamburg Staatsoper, Paris Opera, and the Salzburg Festival.

Michael Schade will be performing Winterreise by Franz Schubert, which combines 24 poems by Wilhelm Müller for piano and vocalist. Winterreise was composed in two parts, each containing twelve songs, the first part in February 1827 and the second in October 1827. Müller, a poet, soldier, and Imperial Librarian at Dessau in Prussia (present-day east-central Germany), died in 1827 aged 33, and probably never heard the first setting of his poems in Die schöne Müllerin (1823), let alone Winterreise. Die schöne Müllerin had become central to the performing repertoire and partnership of Schubert with his friend, the baritone singer Johann Michael Vogl, who introduced Schubert and his songs into many musical households great and small in their tours through Austria during the mid-1820s.

The German–Canadian tenor's stylistic authority was unquestionable, and his formidable technique allowed him to create a mesmerizing effect in quiet songs such as Schumann's "Mondnacht" and Schubert's "Nacht und Träume. Alice Tully Hall - Opera News NYC
