Over the past decade, Aleesa Cohene has achieved renown for her deft work with film footage—building nuanced characters, contexts and relationships from existing film and video material. In recent years her practice has expanded to encompass multiple video channels, painted environments, scents, and—as seen in this exhibition—sculpture, sound and dance. For I Know You Know, the artist presents a series of new works that thoughtfully explore human subjectivity: how we construct ourselves, our relationship to others and the world at large.
Shary Boyle & Emily Vey Duke: The Illuminations Project

For The Illuminations Project, celebrated artists Shary Boyle and Emily Vey Duke have come together to create a suite of visionary drawings and writings that richly illustrate a world of violence, fantasy and feeling. Over a ten-year period the two artists undertook a long-distance call-and-answer exchange, in which Boyle’s drawings and Duke’s writings responded to one another serially, resulting in 31 sets of remarkably incisive texts and images over 65 panels. Shown in its entirety for the first time at Oakville Galleries, The Illuminations Project draws on philosophy, religion and myths alike to weave a tale that speaks to the freedoms and dangers of the wild, the nature of power and desire, and the brutalities of contemporary life.
