Appearing and disappearing depending on one’s vantage point, the horizon line—the place where the sky meets land or sea—has effectively instilled fear, wonder and sublime contemplation throughout the ages. Bringing together work by Robert Burley, Dan Flavin, Yves Gaucher, April Hickox, David Rokeby, Soft Turns, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Colette Whiten, and Kevin Yates, this exhibition looks at a range of contemporary renditions of the horizon line, underscoring that the urge to know beyond the immediately visible—to contend with the limits of vision, life and knowledge—continues to be powerful.

Sonny Assu: Possession

Oakville Galleries at Centennial Square
Through his work in sculpture, painting and other media, artist Sonny Assu looks at identity through the lenses of indigenous history and politics, consumer culture and social media. Possession revolves around several of Assu's canny sculptural installations, which draw on pop cultural forms (from cereal boxes to Starbucks cups) to consider timely questions of value in the context of often-conflicting indigenous and colonial worldviews.
