The Town of Oakville was recognized as a Youth Friendly Community for its outstanding commitment to providing young people with opportunities to play, participate in and contribute to their community. Oakville received Play Works’ gold designation for successfully demonstrating 14 of 16 Youth Friendly Community criteria.
The town’s Youth Week celebration takes place May 1-7 at locations throughout Oakville. Highlights include a Tune up Music Night, Skateboarding at Kinoak, an Art Battle, gym drop-ins, games and movie night, drama workshop and a career night. This year’s Youth Week will also feature a Twitter contest. Youth are encouraged to take a photo at any youth week event and share it on Twitter with #oakvilleyouth for a chance to win over $100 in gift cards. In addition to the scheduled events, Oakville secondary school students will have free access to the fitness centres at Iroquois Ridge, Glen Abbey, River Oaks and Queen Elizabeth Park community centres during Youth Week. Students must be at least 14 years old and have a valid school identification card.
Youth who need transportation assistance to get to and from Youth Week events can pick up free Oakville Transit tickets at any youth centre. For more information on Oakville’s youth centres and programs, visit oakville.ca.
Play Works is an independent group of organizations committed to encouraging and promoting a greater investment in youth play. The program celebrates Ontario communities that provides youth aged 13 to 19 with diverse play opportunities — arts, recreation or civic leadership.
